A Young Volunteer’s Experience - Chris Age 17

I have been doing a variety of art projects for organisations on the WDVDA register and these are looking good on my CV as well as adding to my portfolio: two very important points, I think, but there is a big added bonus in that I have really enjoyed myself and the different challenges I have been given.

It all started when Mum volunteered to do some admin work as a first step to a job change. I was at the time doing GCSE Art (which led, I'm glad to say, to A level) and it was arranged for my name to be on the list of people called upon when art work was needed. I have to date designed two posters for the local Council, designed four Christmas cards for a voluntary organisation and worked on a local newsletter, my responsibilities there being presentation and layout. This work gave me the confidence to design a poster and an invitation for my school's art exhibition where, perhaps, were my greatest critics! I have also designed logos for a bowls team and for a friend&'s new business in leisurewear.

Although artwork is now my involvement with the WDVDA Team, the very first work I did was with a youth club run by the Red Cross for disabled young people. The Red Cross had the idea that it would be more fun and more helpful for the members if the supervisors were around their own age. I found it a good mixture of fun and hard work and I enjoyed the responsibility - as well as some good trips out. It made me realise how lucky I am to be able to do what I want without necessarily asking for someone's help. Voluntary work is not just giving, and it's not giving just to look good. I have had far more back than could ever have imagined. The thing is to give because you want to and to do something that interests you in the first place - the rest just happens!
